Croatia has also seen strong growth during the last year. The annual rate of 11.6 per cent growth at the end of Q4 2007 was marginally lower than the 12.1 per cent at the end of Q3, though this still appears to resemble something of a return to form for Croatia, after rates of house price inflation dipped to below 6 per cent towards the end of 2005. Global house price inflation in the fourth quarter of 2007 stood at 8.2 per cent, compared to 9.7 per cent in Q4 2006, the latest Knight Frank’s report shows. Kozloduy nuclear power plant will build a villa community in the Black Sea village of Kranevo, Dnevnik daily reported on April 9. The company already called a public procurement to design and build the community. The new development, to be built next to an existing vacation complex owned by the nuclear power plant, will be carried out in three phases. Eligible candidates can be both Bulgarian and foreign companies, which are members of Bulgaria's engineers and architects chamber. The companies must prove that they are financially sound and have the necessary staff to perform the tender, Dnevnik said. The participation guarantee is 20 000 leva or five per cent of the project's value. The deadline to submit bids is May 7, with offers to be opened on May 9. The villa community... more

Real estate development is a lucrative large-scale business. So it's unsurprising that some greedy investors have an interest in exploiting every square centimetre of their plot. Unfortunately, this attitude undermines the appeal of a building as well as the comfort and happiness of its residents. The sector's rapid development, particularly the "get rich quick" opportunities in Bulgaria, resulted in developers failing to heed the importance of quality construction. Thankfully, more intelligent investors are emerging who realise that sensible planning and energy conservation do not necessarily clash with the search for profits. Revised building regulations Legislation has also propelled change. Amendments to the Law on Regional Development, approved in 2006, stipulate that... more
