Sofia mayor Boyko Borissov and the head of the State Agency for Youth and Sports (SAYS) Vessela Lecheva discussed the construction of new amusement and sports complexes in Sofia, Bulgarian language daily Standart reported on March 20. A new amusement park, similar to the former Sofialand, will open doors near Sofia’s Zapaden Park (West park), the capital’s chief architect Petar Dikov told Standart daily. Sofia city hall will invite a concession for the garden near Zapaden Park in the coming months. The place is very appropriate for a new amusement park, because there is no car traffic nearby, Dikov commented. The Bulgarian commercial property market is expected to face over-saturation in an average-term period, according to prognosis made by Absolute Capital Management (ACM) investment fund manager Robert Provine. The fund raised 100 million euro a year ago. It planned to invest in Central and Eastern Europe with a focus on Bulgaria and Romania. Despite its intentions, it has no project in Bulgaria yet, investor.bg reported. Provine said that the company preferred to concentrate its efforts on Romania and Ukraine for now. The large number of commercial property projects in Bulgaria made ACM managers conclude that the segment would soon reach saturation. Bulgarian Land Development (BLD) fund, registered at the London stock exchange, announced the purchase of five buildings from Dimitar Blagoev Printing House in Sofia. The buyer, a joint venture between BLD and private investor Norhtridge Capital, acquired a gross actual area of 29 000 sq m, Investor.bg said. The buildings were part of an eight-building industrial complex along Tsarigradsko Shose in central Sofia, which once housed the state printing house. BLD and Northridge Capital announced that the buildings would be turned into 23 500 sq m of class A office space and 3 500 sq m trade floor, with 241 parking places, of which 183 would be underground. Total investment in the project was estimated at 50 million euro, with an estimated project value of 70 million euro, Investor.bg.... more

Two years after announcing plans to build a store in the town of Pazardjik, in southern Bulgaria, German discount retailer Lidl has notified the town mayor of its interest in a 1.3 ha land plot, Dnevnik daily reported on March 10. Lidl, part of Schwarz Unternehmensgruppe, wants to build a 1500-sq m supermarket with 85 parking spaces, its first in the country. The company has offered to gentrify at its own expense the immediate vicinity of the proposed supermarket. The investment in the Lidl's project is evaluated at one million euro. The company operates over 7000 stores for food and non-food products in the discount segment in 22 countries in Western and Central Europe. Schwartz is already presented on the Bulgarian market with its hypermarket chain Kaufland. more

The ongoing credit crisis is prompting some people to take the plunge and invest in a foreign property, an expert has said. According to Paul Collins of the BuyAssociation website, foreign property ownership is becoming more and more popular in the UK. This was partially attributed to economic issues such as the slowdown in the British housing market, as this has prompted some investors to seek potential opportunities overseas. He added that the credit crunch is also having an effect, as many are losing confidence in the amount of money they have in their UK property.
