Major investors plan to construct residential complexes in the northern suburbs of Sofia. Sofia chief architect (the equivalent of a city planner) Petar Dikov was to present the idea to the Sofia Municipal Council (SMC), 24 Chassa daily reported. Dikov said that his idea was that SMC define the territories for long-term development. Companies that build in the selected areas would have to undertake to construct infrastructure there, he said. Sofia’s zoning plan also foresaw development of the city to the north of the ring-road. The municipality wants to attract investors to the region by improving access. The authorities plan to construct a freeway to connect to the Hemus and Trakia highways to the east and with the road to Kalotina border checkpoint to the west.... more

Market Monopoly Of Lowcost Carriers In Bulgaria Intensifies 14/03/2008
Low cost international carriers are facing little competition from equivalent Bulgarian carriers, Pari daily reported on March 4. Established low-cost airlines on the Bulgarian aviation market, such as Sky Europe and Wizz Air, are increasing the frequency of flights to Sofia and Bulgaria's Black Sea resorts. Meanwhile, new carriers, who rely mostly on seasonal flights to Varna and Bourgas, are finding it hard to break into the market. Wizz Air announced on March 4 that it would expand its Sofia base by opening a new route to Brussels South Charleroi Airport starting from 24 July 2008. Lufthansa To Repair Airplanes In Bulgaria From October 21/04/2008
The repair center for airplanes in Sofia will start working in October, announced Andreas Heizner, vice-president of “Lufthansa technique”, informed Darik radio. The German giant received a certificate for a 1st class investor through its joint venture with 'Bulgarian aviation group”, “Lufthansa Technique-Sofia”. The first airplane to be repaired in Sofia is Airbus A 320 owned by Lufthansa. It will arrive on October, 27. Heitzner added that for “Lufthansa technique” as a world company the presence in Bulgaria through “Lufthansa technique – Sofia” is extremely important. This is a very important member of our world network. The company for repairs and maintenance of airplanes will invest more than 16 M EUR in buildings and equipment on the territory of hangar 3 at Sofia airport.... more
