Iban Introduced In Bulgaria From June 5 2006 20/03/2008
The Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) launched on March 1 an awareness campaign for the introduction of the IBAN standard. The IBAN (International Bank Account Number) format will become effective on June 5 2006, and after this date all local payments and transfers from Bulgaria will be made from client IBAN accounts, said Dimitar Kostov, deputy governor of BNB. The new bank account numbers will have 22 symbols instead of the current 10 and will feature letters along with the figures. On March 1, all Bulgarian banks started replacing the numbers of the more than six million accounts used by companies and individuals to date. Construction Of Second Sofia Metro Line Put On Hold 12/03/2008
Sofia city hall will ask for annulment of the tender for the construction of the second line of Sofia's metro network because of the high prices offered by the bidders, Sofia's deputy mayor for transport Velizar Stoilov said, as quoted by Dnevnik daily on March 11. The decision lies with an ad hoc commission, which includes representatives of the city hall, finance and transport ministries representatives, and could decide to either negotiate down the price with the bidders or to start a new tender. “The best thing to do and what we'll probably do is to set up a new tender,” Stoilov told The Sofia Echo.
