Mysterious pits that were found by archaeologists during the research & in the area around the village Rusokastro, Kameno may be part of the cemetery used by occultists or magicians say locals.
The location is about a mile southwest of the fort Rusokastron, also known as the Red Fort. For several years the earth was excavated here. Sometimes, in order to remove the construction material easier workers even used the excavator. They knew they had stumbled on an old cemetery, only when the surface began to appear human bones. At one point it came to pass that the whole field was littered with them. Then residents of Rusokastro called for archaeologists. They in turn found that the place has huge medieval cemetery with a total area of over one hundred acres. Decision taken for the damaged tombs to be cleared.
Rusokastro tourist sitesWhen they started clearing however, researchers were amazed by the fact that besides burials discovered numerous pits dug in antiquity. In them there was nothing but ashes, charcoal, fragments of pottery, small animal bones and small metal fragments /pieces of knives, iron slag, heads of nails, arrowhead/. Pits are circular hole and a round bottom - barrel or ovoid shape. Deeply about two meters, their diameter is about a meter and a half. All are buried in the rock. In some cases, the burial pits cut the beds, but in other burial facilities violate the pits. This is enough for archaeologists convincing evidence that these structures are concurrent. The dead were laid in the Christian tradition - to head west and hands crossed on his chest. Equipment was not found, but in the dust were found pottery fragments from the tenth - thirteenth century. In some cases the feet of the dead were tethered. This custom was practiced in order to defuse the dead, not to make them vampires. Anthropologists note that the physical characteristics of buried were unusual for the middle ages. According to the measurements of the skeletons were very large people, with growth exceeding one meter and eighty centimeters. Not far from the ancient cemetery was found a large area, which apparently belonged to the necropolis.
