Local Taxes In Sofia May Prove Illegal 15/03/2008
Local taxes in Sofia for this year might turn out to be unlawful because the Sofia municipal council has failed to observe the deadline, February 29, for announcing the new rates, Dnevnik daily reported on March 4. Collection of local taxes should have started on March 4, but the new rates haven't been published anywhere. The councilors said that they “have stopped the clock” and will continue work on the taxes and the Sofia budget at the council's next session on March 6. “Stopping the clock” is practice is used in Parliament, but only to extend its sessions within the range of one day. Delaying by one week was too much, lawyers quoted by Dnevnik daily said, and because the councilors have missed the deadline, tax rates should remain the same. A decision by Bulgaria's... more

More Brits Look For Property In Bulgaria 22/03/2008
Though the UK property market continues to show signs of recovery, investors seem to be keener than ever to look further afield, with Bulgaria the country of choice for those looking for something a little different. For people looking to invest in residential property, Bulgaria currently offers a number of popular regions and house prices remain extraordinarily low. It is a fact that has drawn many to the country looking for a second home purely for holiday purposes, but it has also attracted part-time and professional investors looking for capital appreciation in the coming years. EU accession is the big issue here, as it will undoubtedly instigate a rise in house prices in line with a strengthening economy and better relations with a number of other European countries. Most experts... more

Bulgaria - The Cheapest Tourism Destination In Europe 21/04/2008
Holidaymakers face a steep rise in the cost of trips to countries in the eurozone this summer, as they suffer the consequences of the plummeting pound. However, holidays elsewhere in Europe and in the US should offer better value for money, according to a study by the Post Office. The destinations that worked out cheapest overall were Thailand, South Africa and Egypt. The cost of 10 holiday commodities compared by researchers, which included drinks and meals out, added up to Ј28.58 in Thailand, a little under a third of the cost of the same items in Australia and well under half the average price for the same goods in the eurozone. Bulgaria emerged as the cheapest European destination in the study. America was rated most expensive when the same research was carried out last year,... more
