More Highly Skilled Brits Moving To Live Abroad

Has Britain lost its greatness, has the unity been lost from this United Kingdom of ours, or is it simply a fact that the government is taxing us harder and that we’re being forced to work longer hours for less – less money, less job security and less personal freedom?

Because something, somewhere in this nation of ours has gone very seriously wrong indeed.

According to the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development, (OECD), the number of Britons relocating overseas has soared to record highs not seen for fifty years.  And what’s even more significant about the OECD findings is that more highly skilled Brits are moving to live abroad creating something of a brain drain and a gulf in terms of the numbers of qualified individuals available in Britain to fill key medical, engineering and educational posts.

The statistics posted in recent months following on from popular surveys conducted by banks, homes overseas websites and consumer groups interested in whether British citizens are considering a move abroad have been taken quite lightly by the media.  The findings have been seen as something of a laugh and a joke that so many of us have a dream of one day living abroad and sampling whether the grass really is greener elsewhere.  After all, those surveyed were UK based and only thinking about their prospects overseas.  The OECD findings on the other hand are quite another matter.

For a start the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development is one of the most respected international bodies in the world.  Furthermore their survey is the most comprehensive of its kind and it has examined the migration patterns of nationals from 29 countries.  Therefore to attempt to dismiss or make a joke out of their findings is really unacceptable.  Which is why it is just so concerning when you realise that there are now 3.247 million Brits living abroad and that well over a million of them are graduates.

The only other nation surveyed by the OECD to have a higher exit rate of citizens is Mexico…

Over one in ten of Britain’s most skilled or educated people now live abroad according to the survey’s findings.  And whilst you might like to believe these are just people who have decided to retire abroad, almost two thirds are actually of working age and have gone overseas in search of better prospects, lower taxes and an overall better lifestyle.

The Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development reports that of all those living abroad who are graduates, 27.3% have health or education qualifications, 37.7% were qualified in humanities or social sciences and 28.5% were scientists and engineers...proving that Britain is losing some of its most highly qualified, in demand citizens.

What is it that’s pushing so many of us to consider starting a new life abroad?  Sure, the weather, rising crime, immigration issues and the cost of living are likely to be supporting factors, but could it just be that the employment landscape in the UK is too bleak?

More British citizens now commute for longer, work greater hours, endure higher levels of stress, have to afford higher mortgage payments and suffer employment insecurity on top of high levels of taxation – fact.  So, the question should actually be, what’s keeping so many Britons in Britain?  Maybe we should all be looking overseas for a better quality of life.
