Religious Tourism - The Monasteries Around Veliko Tarnovo 21/11/2008
People's faith is different and so are the ways they get to it. If in ancient times, pilgrimages were a dangerous enterprise, nowadays, the contemporary pilgrims can travel as much as they want in cyberspace. It is not the same thing, though! Among the numerous routes of religious tourism in Bulgaria, we've chosen the one that leads to a group of monasteries around the medieval Bulgarian capital of Veliko Tarnovo in Northern Bulgaria."These medieval spiritual centers continue to be a focus of historical research," says Ass. Prof. D-r Plamen Pavlov, lecturer at the St. Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Tarnovo. His narrow area of expertise is the history of Byzantium and the Balkan states in the period IV-XV centuries."Today, only one hill, situated south of the medieval... more

Old Sofia Bath Will House Spa Centre And History Museum 04/09/2008
The historic building of the central mineral baths in downtown Sofia has long become one of the city's symbols. Officially closed in 1986, its fate remained undecided, while every municipal administration that came to power deliberated what new purpose to attach to the old building. Finally, in July, a solution was found and officially published in the State Gazette: the building was cut in two. The north wing, it was decided, would house a spa centre, and it was given in a 20-year concession. The centre would take up to 5600 sq m, with the remaining 7000 sq m going to house exponents of the Sofia city museum, Stroitelstvo Gradut reported. One of the main responsibilities of the future concessionaire will be to fully renovate and reconstruct the north wing and to carry out repairs of... more

Residents Of Sofias Mladost District Protest Against Construction Plans 21/06/2008
The initiative committee of Sofia’s Mladost district’s residents, together with Zelenite political party (Bulgarian Greens), will stage a rally on June 23 at 7pm in front of the Mladost district hall to protest against the district's urban plan, which envisions building up areas between blocks of flats and the “destruction of green areas” in Mladost. The committee has created a website, where they put pictures and descriptions of all places that would be "destroyed", and called on fellow residents to “Come to clearly express our standpoint and disagreement with this madness!” The reason for the rally is the detailed master plan of the district, which includes many new residential and business buildings to be constructed over the existing green areas, yards and children’s playgrounds.... more
