Despite everything that has been said about the Bulgarian property market bubble either having burst or being just about to, the cost of renting industrial and logistics plots in the capital Sofia is among the highest in a list including the Baltic countries, Romania and Ukraine, according to Estonian real estate consultancy company Arco Vara’s latest report on the property market. Sofia ranked second after the Ukrainian capital Kiev, with rents in the Bulgarian capital of four to 10 euro a sq m. In Kiev, rents varied between 7.4 and 11.5 euro a sq m. The highest rents in the other countries did not exceed six euro a sq m, according to the report. According to a poll by MyChild.co.uk, about two-thirds of parents in the UK are planning to take their children abroad with them during the school holidays. Research showed that Spain was the clear favourite among this group, although France was also found to be rated highly. This suggests that owners of rental accommodation in family-friendly tourist destinations could be set to see considerable demand this summer. Bulgaria's December Jobless Rate Down By 2.21% 19/03/2008
Unemployment in Bulgaria stood at 6.91% in December, down by 2.21% from a year earlier, but up from November, the national employment agency said. The jobless rate marks a slight increase of 0.29% over the previous month, which is traditional for the end of the year. The total number of Bulgarians registered with the unemployment agency at the end of the year was 255 910, a 4.3% increase over the previous month. The jobless rate for the whole year averaged 7.75%, down by 1.86 % from 2006. more

Hotels built on the beach-front, or occupying a part of it, are to be bulldozed, said the regional development deputy minister Savin Kovachev in Varna, Dnevnik daily reports. But this can only be achieved if all relevent bodies do their work properly, he added. First, the Regional Directorate for National Construction Supervision has to acknowledge the illegality of the constructions and issue demolition orders, Kovachev commented. Then the court has to approve the resolution. This would then be followed by a body securing the safe demolition of the hotel in question. Procedures on demolishing such developments started in 2002-2003 but many orders issued are still in court. Bulgaria has absorbed about 23 per cent of the funds for infrastructure from EU's pre-accession ISPA programme. According to data published on February 19 by the Ministry of Finance, the total sum for ISPA projects is 1.5 billion euro. However, the EU, international financial institutions and Bulgaria's co-financing budget, have paid only 347 million euro so far. The Finance Ministry data, however, indicates that funds for contractual projects in 2007 have doubled. At the end of January 2007, the funds were only 34 per cent of the total volume of the programme, while the January 2008 report indicates the contracts already cover 70 per cent of ISPA scope.
